Dr Darren Joseph
Dr Darren Joseph is an adult pulmonologist and specialist physician. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Cape Town, graduating with first class honours and distinction in the pre-clinical and final clinical examinations.
As a medical student, he held various leadership positions including being elected as his final year class representative, as well as holding various senior positions in SHAWCO Health, a student-run volunteer health organisation servicing underprivileged communities across Cape Town and surrounding areas.
He completed his internship at Tembisa Hospital, winning performance awards during this time for his rotations in family medicine and paediatrics. After finishing community service at Tshwane District Hospital, Dr Joseph spent several years working in emergency medicine in the private sector. He then worked as a medical officer in the Department of Critical Care at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, before embarking on further postgraduate studies in Internal Medicine. He successfully completed his specialist training in 2017, graduating cum laude from the University of Pretoria with an MMed in Internal Medicine, as well as obtaining his FCP from the College of Medicine South Africa.
In 2023 he successfully completed a fellowship in adult pulmonology, having done a considerable amount of his training during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, he conducted research in conjunction with the Department of Immunology towards an MPhil through the University of Pretoria.
Since completing his specialisations, Dr Joseph has held joint appointments as a specialist consultant physician in the Department of Internal Medicine at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, as well as a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria. He has comanaged a general medical unit, while at the same time working in the adult pulmonology and medical critical care units. He has several publications in the field of general medicine, as well as pulmonology.
Dr Joseph is a devoted husband, father of 2 boys and an active member of his community.
